The Friends of the Oswegatchie Hills Nature Preserve has established
a number of committees that are working hard in a coordinated grassroots
effort to accomplish our goal: creating a Nature Preserve in the undeveloped
lands of Oswegatchie Hills.
Some committees are well-staffed and moving forward, and others are in
their infancy. But we can always use more help, and we know that each
volunteer brings his/her unique talents – to the table or, in the
future, to the trail!
Let us know how you would like to be involved. You can work at home,
or as a part of a group… out in the community or on your computer…on
a short-term project when you have the time…or on a long-term effort,
providing leadership, planning or support functions. Most importantly
-- there is a place for everyone who shares our interest in preserving
the Hills in helping us toward our common goal.
Please contact our volunteer coordinator at volunteers@oswhills.org
to get more information, or to let us know how you would like to help.
Noted below are committees that currently need help, ideas and enthusiasm.
As we move forward, we may create new committees or subcommittees, and,
at times, there will be positions for volunteers who enjoy working across
several committees on a particular issue.
The Committees that need your help now are:
Capital Campaign - Help us work with local businesses and philanthropists
to raise money for purchasing land in Oswegatchie Hills.
Children’s Committee – Plans and holds events to get children
and local schools involved with and enthusiastic about the efforts of
the Friends of Oswegatchie Hills Nature Preserve.
Ecology/Geology/Archeology – Researches and identifies unique
environmental and cultural concerns in Oswegatchie Hills and educates
the public about their value.
Grant Writing – Researches funding opportunities, and writes grant
applications as opportunities arise to raise funds for the organization’s
projects and programs.
Membership Committee – Performs community outreach to educate,
inform and motivate new members. Raises membership fees, maintains membership
information and responds to correspondence.
Neighborhood Outreach – Works with local neighborhood leaders/groups
to inform and involve concerned citizens in our efforts.
Nature Preserve Design and Ongoing Use – Will work to propose
a design layout as well as ongoing use and maintenance policy/plans
for the Nature Preserve.
If you have an idea or a skill you feel we could use, and don’t
see what you feel is a “match” above, please email us at volunteers@oswhills.org
. We will find a way to productively use your expertise and get you involved!
